Stem & Stamen officers installed
The Stem and Stamen Garden Club met in the home of Henry and Merrie Bennett on Wednesday, May 11, and longtime member Martina Ellis presided over the installation of officers for 2022-23. Pictured from left are President Merrie Bennett, Secretary Nora Patterson and Vice-President Barbara Forshag. Not pictured is Treasurer Shannon Lascaro. The officers placed symbolic colored roses in a vase while pledging to perform the duties of their office. Then members each added a rose to the arrangement as they affirmed their commitment to participate in club activities and projects. Following the installation, a brief business meeting was conducted. Sarah Brumfield and Nancy Ellis volunteered to handle the Garden of the Month selections for the upcoming year. Hostess’ schedules were finalized and refreshments served.

The Stem and Stamen Garden Club in Amite selected the home of Doug and Charlene Kent on N. Duncan Avenue for May 2022 Garden of the Month.  The spacious lawn is accented with beautifully manicured beds and assorted pot plants. Lush greenery and colorful blooming plants are visible in the front, side and back yard.

Amaryllis, gladiolus, azaleas, hydrangeas, deep red dwarf azaleas, agapanthus, and pink drift roses are just a few of the plants noted. Crepe Myrtles, red Japanese Maple, and White Japanese magnolia are a sampling of small trees.

Especially noteworthy is the care and use of plants collected from family and friends. There are hybrid day lilies from the late Chuck Edwards, gladiolus  from Ferdy Duplantier, and old variety purple azaleas and day lilies from the Fluker home of Doug’s parents.

The Stem and Stamen Garden Club of Amite has selected the home of  Brent and Dawn Covington as the December Garden of the Month.  The beautiful home is accented with well maintained flower beds.  Plantings include dwarf gardenias, foxtail ferns, leatherleaf fern,  drift roses, Agapanthus, and hydrangeas.  Look again and you will see
azaleas, a sweet olive tree, English ivy, fatsia, and a sasanqua Camellia in full bloom.  Another highlight of this home is the shaded porch with a welcoming bench and several potted plants.
