President's Message - Summer Board - July 20, 2026
What an exciting first year of my two-year term, so many new and interesting places to visit and club members to meet. The steady stream of emails coming fast and furious, kept me on my toes.
This year was LGCF’s 90th Convention year. My theme “Our Roots Deep at LGCF” is so fitting for our organization. For generations we have kept our legacy alive, bringing club members together for a common goal, making our world a better place.
Our July Newsletter is filled with a variety of topics: The LGCF Convention was a tremendous success in Houma, District III, as Gail Aycock will report later today. We were so fortunate to have had NGC President, Donna Donnelly’s visit. She and her husband, Harold, had such kind words to say about their visit, “down the bayou”.
Plans for next year’s convention are well underway. Susan Finney will have a report for us. Denise Thorne, DSGC Regional Director, will be our guest for District II’s 2027 Convention. The 2028 Convention Chairman, Vicky Fannaly has her committee in place as well. They have teamed up with the Visit Baton Rouge Tourism Group. LGCF awards were presented to various garden clubs and club members.
Our Award of Commendation went to a very deserving individual Dr. Joe Willis, LSU Ag. Agent, Shady Oaks Garden Club nominated him. Deep South Garden Clubs Zoom meeting and cruise were interesting. The highlight of the NGC Convention in St. Louis was when Dr. Joe Willis was called to the podium to receive the Award of Excellence for non-members given by NGC to an individual nominated by a garden club for outstanding contribution to its goals. I checked with an AI site and according to them, he is Louisiana’s first recipient. He received a beautiful plaque and $500.
Later in our program today, additional NGC and DSGC awards will be presented by Heather Carroll and Ammy Taylor. I am happy to report that our photo winner, Darnelle Delcambre, received $50.00 for her beautiful photo of a passionflower. We have introduced another photo contest, this time highlighting floral designs with another $50.00 prize. Look for details in the July Newsletter. Thank you Snoann for the highly informative Newsletter. Our membership challenge club winner has been chosen according to the dues collected for this year. The winning club will receive $250 at their fall District Meeting in October.
Also, our live oak registration for the Independence Oak Series has surpassed all expectations. A beautiful live oak has been selected to celebrate America’s 250th birthday and will replace the Seven Sisters Oak on the Website homepage. The winning oak will be honored at the fall District meeting where the oak lives in October.
The Louisiana Legislature have proclaimed the Peggy Martin Rose as the official state rose through the passage of Senate Resolution #55. The resolution recognizes a flower that has become a powerful symbol of resilience, perseverance, and renewal for Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. The proclamation builds upon local recognition of Plaquemines Parish, where the Parish Council officially named the Peggy Martin Rose as the parish’s official rose in 2026. We may have another NGC Award of Excellence in the making with Mrs. Peggy Martin’s contributions.
Humzinger is still flying around the room for scholarship donations. With both the club scholarship challenge and Humzinger we have collected enough to fund scholarships that will be awarded in August. Susan Finney and her committee met yesterday to review the applications. Just remember that it is important to spread the word for possible candidates.
I hope that many of you, here today, attended the Litter Free Schools program, which was previously Cleanest City, presented by Heather Hart and Eva Delatte, Keep Louisiana Beautiful representatives. We hope to have the program in place by the start of the new school year in the fall. When you are called upon, please consider volunteering your services.
All the officer and chairmen reports given today or sent in earlier will appear on the LGCF Website. I thought by doing this more club members would have a better understanding of what business occurs at Summer Board. Vicky Fannaly will post all reports on our LGCF website for easy access to anyone interested. So be sure to check it out.

Club Membership $250 Challenge
• At our upcoming 2026 Summer Board meeting, the Membership challenge club winner will be announced. The winning club will receive $250. It’s not to late to recruit new members to your clubs.
Hum Zinger Scholarship Fund/Garden Club Scholarship Challenge
• Hum Zinger is still flying around the room for scholarship donations. With both the club scholarship challenge and Hum Zinger we collected enough to fund our scholarships. Thank you so much to those that have so generously donated.
Independence Celebration Oaks Series
• Our live oak registration has surpassed all expectations, what began as 76 to celebrate America’s 250th birthday has grown to 303. The winning tree will be given a special name and appear on the Homepage of our website for the rest of my term.
LGCF Newsletter Photography Contest
• Our April Newsletter is filled with a variety of topics; we have a winner for the photo contest. Darnelle Delcambre, a member of New Iberia Garden Club. She has received $50 for her beautiful photograph of a passionflower, that appears on the Spring edition Newsletter cover. Our runner-up winner was Connie Moore, Covington Garden Club. Thank you to all the members thar submitted photographs. We are introducing another photo contest, this time highlighting completed floral designs with another $50 prize. Details are in the April Newsletter.
New 2026 LGCF Awards
• Two new awards were added to our LGCF Awards list, LGCF Award # 18B Hummingbird Award and LGCF Award #37 Patriotic Container Gardening Award. Also, several awards were revised and some removed. Please check under the Awards Section-LGCF Lists-Forms rules on the LGCF website for specific information. Also take a moment to check out the DSGC Award winners on the LGCF Website. After the NGC Convention, May 4-6, 2026, the 2025 NGC and LGCF Awards will be posted. Congratulations to all that took part.
Keep Louisiana Beautiful Partnership
• We now have an official partnership with Keep Louisiana Beautiful to replace our Cleanest City Contest. The new initiative is called “Litter Free Schools” for grades K-5. Each District, through a committee, will train club members to go into the schools to present programs provided by Keep Louisiana Beautiful. Our goal is to have all this ready by the fall. As partners we encourage all clubs to support all the programs KLB promotes for a clean and beautiful state.

A Note from Carla Gauthier, LGCF PresidentWhat an eventful Summer Board meeting! The Independence Park Botanic Garden, with those beautiful irises painted across the front, was the perfect setting for such an event. We shared ideas, made new friends, reacquainted ourselves with others, learned a few things we did not know before, laughed, all the while carrying on the business of LGCF. I wanted to thank all that attended the function and those that took on the many tasks necessary to make it perfect. As I said at the meeting, I have a new extended family now, so many of you stepped forward to help, I didn’t even have to ask, just like a real family. I look forward to sharing more happy times with all of you over the next two years…...Carla |

Beauty of Life - Breast Cancer Awareness Garden,
West Baton Rouge Garden & Civic Club - October 1, 2025
West Baton Rouge Garden & Civic Club dedicated their Beauty of Life Garden honoring Breast Cancer Awareness on this first day of October. Representing Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. were State President Carla Gauthier and President Elect Kyle Martin, District VI Director Vicky Fannaly, Landscape Design School Chairman Clara Earl, WBR President Kim Callegan and the hardworking Geaux Native team from WBR Garden Club - Elisa Tubbs and Leigh Prather who designed and planted the many beds like this and others for pollinators, native plants, birds, and wildlife habitat. All clubs are members of Deep South Garden Clubs Inc. and National Garden Clubs Inc.
