Abbeville Garden Club News - Arbor Day Tree Planting 2021

Picture
The Abbeville Garden Club celebrated Louisiana Arbor Day by planting a Shumard Oak at the Abbeville Branch of the Vermilion Parish Library. Gwen Lanoux, Arbor Day Chairman presided over a short program. The Shumard Oak is a stately, strong, and long-lived tree with beautiful fall colors. It is a great native tree selection for Louisiana and for this location. The species is very adaptable and has been successfully grown in urban areas. While this is a favorite tree for homeowners it is also loved by deer and squirrels for their love of its small acorns.

Arbor Day is a special day that is set aside throughout the world on different dates depending on local seasons and temperature. Abor Day’s goal is to raise awareness of trees and the important role that they play in our environment. Arbor Day helps us learn more about the use of products that are derived from trees, such as wood and paper, and understanding how these can be treated and managed in a sustainable way.

Attending the celebration was Councilwoman Ros White, Library Director Charlotte Bourge, Councilman Brady Broussard, Jr., Vanna Plaisance and Councilman Francis Plaisance, Garden Club President Marietta Clark, Arbor Day Chairmen Gwen Lanoux, members of the Abbeville Garden Club, Abbeville Women’s Club, the Vermilion Library Foundation, and Robert LeBlanc, Library Maintenance and Grounds Keeper.  Abbeville Garden Club is an affiliate of National Garden Clubs, Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc., and Louisiana Garden Club Federation, District III.

Abbeville Garden Club News – Arbor Day Book Donation

Picture
Abbeville Garden Club donated a children’s book to the Abbeville Branch of the Vermilion Parish Library in honor of Louisiana Arbor Day, January 15, 2021.  The book The Forever Tree by Tereasa Suratt and Donna Lukas is based on a real tree in Wisconsin that became something more.  It is a timeless story about loss and renewal at home and in nature.

AGC put in a request to Sara Bailey-McDaniel, Children’s Services Manager, to implement a Virtual Storytime and a Children’s Craft Activity for Arbor Day Week.  Sarah scheduled a Virtual Storytime Reading for Tuesday, January 19, 2021 on the Vermilion Parish Library Facebook Page.   She also developed a Children’s Craft based on The Forever Tree which parents could pick up and complete with their children at home.

Abbeville Garden Club members pictured with the donated book, The Forever Tree, and the children’s craft activity on the table are (left to right) AGC President Marietta Clark, Patsy Hebert, Joyce Thibodeaux, Vermilion Parish Library Children’s Services Manager Sara Bailey-McDaniel, AGC Arbor Day Chairman Gwen Lanoux, Liz Gremilion, and Susie Ledet.  Abbeville Garden Club is an affiliate of National Garden Clubs, Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc., and Louisiana Garden Club Federation, District III.
