Federated Garden Clubs in Southwest Louisiana hosted “The Roaring ‘20s”, a small-standard flower show, in conjunction with the Southwest Louisiana Garden Conference and Expo at Burton Coliseum, March 27-28. The show was judged by the National Garden Club standards. Members from the Crowley Garden Club, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club of Lake Charles, and Lake Charles Garden Club entered plant material in the show’s Horticulture Division and 12 creative floral designs in the Design Division. The third Division is Botanical Arts—photography. The winners are: Division I: Horticulture Gail Yantis, Lake Charles Garden Club, won an Award of Merit for a snapdragon (Antirrhinum). Margo Racca, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club, won Awards of Merit for an orchid (cattleya hybridus x Schomburkia tibicinis) and for a ming fern (Asparagus retrofractus). She earned the Sweepstakes Award for having the most blue ribbons in the entire flower show. Clare Prejean, a Master Gardener, won Awards of Merit for an amaryllis and a salmon Drift Rose. The amaryllis also received the Award of Horticultural Excellence for the highest score in the Horticulture Division. Her Chinese fringe tree (Chionanthus retusus) received the Arboreal Award. Barbara Morris, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club, won an Award of Merit for a coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens). Darci Ensminger, Lake Charles Garden Club, won an Arboreal Award for a nandina (Nandina domestica). Dorisy Hay, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club, won a Growers Choice Award for a desert rose (Adenium obesum). Susan Caldwell, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club, won a Growers Choice Award for a bromeliad.
Division II: Design Class 1: Spatial Thrust design, first place went to Margo Racca, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club. Class 2: Grouped Mass design, first place went to Pam Langley, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club. Class 3: Angular design, first place and the Designers Choice Award, which is the highest award in the design division, went to Pam Langley, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club.
Division III: Photography Dorisy Hay, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club, won first place in Class 1: “Speakeasies”. Lisa Maunel, Diggers and Weeders Garden Club, won first place in Class 2: “Moonshine”. Carrie Chrisco, Lake Charles Garden Club, won first place in Class 3: “Bottles” and the Botanical Arts Photography Award.
People’s Choice
Attendees picked the group mass design by Ellen Carter and the photo by Carrie Chrisco for the People’s Choice Awards. Both Carter and Chrisco are Lake Charles Garden Club members.

Diggers and Weeders Garden Club held their “showy hat” May social on Monday, May 12. The 2025 – 2027 officers were installed by Linda Finley. Margo Racca, incoming president, is show with her officers. Other pics include some of the members showing of their hats.
