Flower Show Judges School
September 18-19, 2019
Members and friends of New Orleans Council of NGC Flower Show Judges designed the first arrangement of the season in the urns of the Great Hall of the New Orleans Museum Of Art.
This was Course 4 the last of our series. It was September 17 and 18th with testing on the 19th. We had students , refreshers and auditors from all over Louisiana and many other parts of the United States. It is so interesting to meet people from away with similar interest and goals. NGC makes this possible by regulating the course of instruction and the instructors so that each course has the same material no matter where you take it. Rarely are the instructors residents of the area. Not only was the material interesting and well presented but everyone present added to the fun. We even had fun dinners at “Naturally New Orleans” restaurants.
Our instructors were Pam Braun for horticulture and Kathleen Hawryluk for design. Students and instructors alike enjoyed our days and evenings in New Orleans including a Kathleen trying Bar B Que Shrimp at Manale’s bib and all!

Staging panel - it is fun to see how different colors work with your design. This particular design was staged on a pedestal in the Covington Flower Show, but I enjoyed playing with color. - Carrie Martin

Flower Show I Slide Show!
The horticulture curriculum consists of basic general information on proper gardening techniques from seed/plant selection to plant culture and control of problems. Information is also presented on cultural needs of specific perennials, annuals, trees and shrubs, as well as fruits, vegetables and nuts and how to grow superior container plants.
Design instruction covers traditional floral arrangements through contemporary styles and even designs incorporating lights and motors. Many attendees are particularly interested in table setting designs showing coordination of floral centerpiece, linens and dishes. Vignettes, small segments of rooms, also give ideas on interior decorating.
While the primary purpose of these courses is to train those wishing to become flower show judges, many people attend for information only and those people do not have to take the examinations!
